JORHAT, Jan 18 – A five-member delegation of high officials, led by Poldej Worachat, Minister, Charge d’Affaires of Royal Thai Embassy, visited Betbari Shyam, Balijan Shyam and Na-Shyam villages in Titabor subdivision recently. The delegation held a meeting in view of the proposed visit of Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn here around mid-February this year.
Professor Lalit Shyam, chief adviser and former president of All Assam Buddhist Association, the regional centre of World Fellowship of Buddhists, initiated the discussions during the tour of the Thai delegation. Professor Shyam explained the age-old religious, cultural and social ties between the Tai Buddhists of Assam and the people of Thailand.
The high-level Thai delegation is understood to have been attracted by the historical, cultural and social resources of the Tai Buddhist villages and the scenic landscape.
It may be mentioned here that Professor Shyam had invited the Thai princess, Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, to visit Assam during his participation in the birthday celebrations of King Bhumibol Adyulyadej in Thai capital Bangkok recently.
