Highest Mizo literary award conferred on Prof Khiangte

Aizawl, May 27 (NNN): Pu Buanga Award 2010, the highest literary prize which was given every five years by the Mizo Academy of Letters, Lunglei district has gone to Dr. Laltluangliana Khiangte, who is an accomplished playwright-dramatist, poet, scholar-critic, essayist, biographer and folklorist, a professor of Mizo language and literature in the Mizoram University.
The Award was given away by Dr. R.Lalthangliana, MLA on May 21 last at the Auditorium of Art & Culture, Lunglei before an audience of admirers and writers. Honouring the pioneer Missionary Rev. J.H.Lorrain, whom the Mizos called him with this name, PU BUANGA AWARD has been given to the most deserving litterateur of the state in every five years starting from 2000 AD. The Award consisted of a special Scarf (Zochawi diar), Citation, Trophy and a Cash prize of Rs. 5,000.
Prof. Laltluangliana Khiangte has achieved distinction of being recognized as a playwright and poet but is also one of the most prominent writers and folklorists in North-east India. He has taken the struggle among tribal society as his subject and fictionalized it, thus instituting a different genre especially in the field of playwriting. He has received many awards for his remarkable contribution to the development and growth of Mizo language and literature.
Born on June 28, 1961 at Saitual to one church elder Tlanghmingthanga (formerly teacher and music instructor) of Khiangte clan and Mrs. Darngeni, a young Laltluangliana completed his Master Degree in 1984 in English Literature and hence awarded Ph.D in 1991 and D.Litt. in 1999.
He was a convenor of Civil Rights, and Relief & Development Committee and a former Exe. Member of North East India Christian Council, who happened to be an active Youth leadership at Shillong right from 1979 to 2003 and a dedicated Church Elder from 2007 onwards in Aizawl.

Mizo bodies appeal for normalcy in Nagaland-Manipur

Various civil societies and political parties of Mizoram have expressed concern over the ongoing "misunderstanding" between the neighbouring states - Manipur and Nagaland. According to a joint press statement issued by representatives of Mizo organisations, the ongoing situation between two communities was assessed at a meeting of various civil societies and political parties of Mizoram at Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) office May 27.
While pleading for early solution to end the hardships being faced by the people and for "re-establishment of normalcy" between the two states, the house also resolved to offer their services, if required, towards the restoration of normal life among the people of Manipur and Nagaland.
The signatories of the joint statement included MZP general secretary, H. Lalremsiama; Mizo Hmeichhe Insuihkhawm Pawl (MHIP) secretary, F. Lalramliani; Mizo National Front (MNF) secretary, P.C. Laltlansanga; Zoram Nationalist Party Youth (ZNPY) president, P.C. Vanlalruata; Mizo Peoples Conference (MPC) secretary, Zongensanga Sailo; and Bhartya Janata Party (BJP) Mizoram state secretary, F.C. Zese.

Mizoram: State level seminar on MIZO poetry

Aizawl: An UGC Sponsored State Level Seminar on Mizo Poetry organized by Govt. T. Romana College in collaboration with Mizo Language & Literature Teachers' Academy (MILLTA) was held today at I & PR Auditorium, Aizawl.

In the seminar, B. Lalthangliana, Lecturer Hrangbana College, Thuamtea Khawlhring, Lecturer J. Buana College, Lalrammawia Ngente, Lecturer Johnson College and Lalsangzuala, Asst. Professor MZU each presented a paper on Mizo Poetry and its development before and after the 20th century.

Mizoram Education Minister Lalsawta grace MSTA general conference

Aizawl, May 26 : Education Minister Lalsawta graced a 2-days function of the 7th - Mizoram Middle School Teachers' Association (MSTA) General Conference, held at Vanapa Hall as Chief Guest.

Addressing a gathering of teachers, Lalsawta expressed his hope of a bright future for Mizoram, owing to the fact that he works along with the Chief Minister who has a keen interest in education, Parliamentary Secretary who has had a rich experience in the field of education and Education Secretary who is not a novice either in the nuances of education set-up of mizoram. Chief Guest reiterated the importance of showing our love and respect for teachers all the time, lest our accolades and praises may sound cliché if expressed only on the 5th September-Teachers' day.

He exhorted the assembled teachers to uphold themselves with dignity and righteousness by giving their best and all-out efforts in their professions. He also urged the teachers to strive harder for each day for the betterment of mizoram. He also added that big industries and hi-fi machinery may be beyond our reach, but we can improve and utilize education which is at our very reach, by the dedication and hard work of our beloved teachers. Government of Mizoram is trying its best to redress the problem of government schools so that our children are not fleeing from government schools to private run schools. Expressing his hope of seeing children drifted back to government schools in near future.

The forenoon of the first day of conference was presided over by Sr.Vice president C.Thantluanga with a theme of Quality Education, and the business of association was conducted in the afternoon.

Pu Lal Thanhawla turns 72

Aizawl, May 19 (NNN): Mizoram Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla turns 72 today. A celebration function was organised at Chief Minister Conference Hall today attended by well wishers in which the chief minister cut a birthday cake amidst huge applaused from the gatherings. Prime minister Dr. Manmohan Singh also wished Lal Thanhawla on his 72nd birthday this morning through telephone.
The prime minister during his telephonic conversation with the chief minister wished for his successful life in future. Manmohan Singh also hoped that under the able leadership of Lal Thanhawla, Mizoram will be a transparency government, free of corruption and good administration. The Prime Minister then wished the people of Mizoram to have covetous development in every angle through Congress ministry in the Centre and the state.
The chief minister on his part felt priviledged and expressed his gratitude on the Prime Minister's words and promised to work even harder to fullfil his aims of making Mizoram a better place. He also thanked Manmohan Singh for his support over New Land Use Policy (NLUP), the flagship programme of the Congress government in Mizoram.
Meanwhile, at the third meeting of New Land Use Policy (NLUP)'s apex board today in Aizawl, Lal Thanhawla said that the NLUP is a remarkable programme aimed at creating new means of livelihood for people in rural areas through Government support thereby ushering in development at an accelarated pace.
He added that the NLUP programme is not only aimed at generating new avenues of employment but also can go a long way in eradicating jhum cultivation, minimising deforestation, mitigating environmental degradation and conservation of the rich flora and fauna of the state.

Brus to Return Home from Tripura

Aizawl, May 11 : The 462 Bru families who fled Mizoram for Tripura following the murder of a Mizo youth by Bru militants on November 13 near Bungthuam hamlet on the Mizoram-Tripura border, would begin returning from tomorrow, a senior Mizoram home department official said here today.

The official told PTI that the state government had completed all arrangements for the repatriation process. Administrative officers have been designated for all the eight villages to oversee the return under the supervision of Mamit district deputy commissioner Zothankhuma.

The state government, following request from the Union Home Ministry, made arrangements for the repatriation of Bru families from May 11. It was to be completed by May 15.

Identification of bona fide residents of Mizoram would be made at the border for which NREGS job cards, ration cards and enrolment in the voters' lists would be needed, state Home Secretary Lalmalsawma said.

Each family would be given Rs 80,000 to be disbursed and free rations for nine months, he said.

Meanwhile, the Mizoram Bru Displaced People's Forum president Elvis Chorkhy was quoted as saying that advance payment of Rs 1,500 has been demanded for travel expenses.

The murder of the youth, Zarzokima, on November 13, three days before the proposed commencement of the repatriation of Brus from six relief camps in North Tripura upset the repatriation process of refugees who were there since 1997. It also triggered communal tension resulting in another exodus of Brus to Tripura.

NAMSA attends ‘Drag race’ in Aizwal

The Nagaland Adventure and Motor Sports Association attended the recently conducted Mizoram Motorsports Association (MiMSA) SPEED RUN (Drag Race) on April 30 and May 1 at Tuirial Airfield, Aizawl as observers. This was the first Drag Race event in the Northeast for Two Wheelers.

The representatives of NAMSA were led by Vikeshe Shohe, (president) and two other members. Meanwhile, the NAMSA has appreciated the Mizoram Motorsports Association (MiMSA) for promoting motorsports in Mizoram.
